Along with many iconic startups, Metro Lighting was launched in a garage on Virginia Street in 1993, the same year our first of three daughters was born. Originally named Organically Grown Design Works, our design-build company made lighting fixtures that fit each client's home and style. As recent architecture grads, Christa was drafting plans for rebuilds after the 1991 firestorm and Lawrence was refurbishing antique lighting at Ohmega Salvage. With a newborn, it seemed like the perfect time to start a new business, right?! Yes, we were young, idealistic, and ready for adventure in our oversized 1990s hipster overalls.
In 1995, we changed our name to Metro Lighting & Crafts, to reflect a growing company and as a nod to our architectural inspiration, the Art Nouveau style Paris Metro stations. From our home garage, to 600 square feet on Delaware Street, to three progressively larger spaces along a two-block stretch of San Pablo, we've always called Berkeley our home.
Thanks to our creative and supportive customers, along with an incredibly talented crew of metalworkers and glass artists, we've designed and built over 50,000 fixtures in our shop over the last 25 years. On any day, Metro Lighting lights up thousands of homes in the Bay Area and from coast to coast, as well as wineries, hotels, and dozens of restaurants.
Throughout the rest of 2018, we'll be celebrating with special events and offers. Stay tuned!
