Customer Stories

Lawrence worked extensively with restauranteur Jack Knowles to design the exquisitely modern handcrafted fixtures for Rumbo al Sur, Jack's project in the Glenview district of North Oakland. The goal was to have a familiarity of design for patrons of Jack's other restaurant, A Cote, but to also be uniquely styled for the new building. Inspired by other "wavy" metalwork on site, we designed unusual new fixtures that are subtle yet sculptural. Many shades and colors were sampled before designing the custom set of varied cylinder shades in burgundy and amber. The effect is like twigs glowing in the fireplace in a historic mission hotel.

Quotes from Yelp reviews:

Betty H. "The beautiful d├ęcor and the dimly lit atmosphere is jaw dropping. Whoever designed the lighting deserves a standing ovation."

T A. Oakland, "Rumbo set the mood with a romantic interior, featuring warm colors and artsy lighting with a rugged edge... you could tell a lot of thought went into these features."

David E. "You enter and realize that every detail of the environment has been meticulously crafted..."

Heather M. "EXCELLENT LIGHTING!!! ... love, love, love the atmosphere they created here. Someone really did their homework and paid attention to the details."

The architects for this popular restaurant in downtown Berkeley brought concept sketches to us for fabrication. We developed construction details and shop drawings for approval, then built them. The drum shades have a welded steel frame wrapped with copper mesh, and are hung from stainless steel aircraft cables.

"The first thing everyone comments on when they enter our newly remodeled home is, "Wow!  Your light fixtures are gorgeous!"   Lawrence and Christa were fabulous to work with, had lots of good ideas and found great solutions to challenges.  We needed to 'customize' several of the fixtures due to space constraints and every time, their solutions were brilliant and just perfect for the spaces!  The most fun was talking out ideas with Lawrence, watching him do quick, beautiful little sketches and then finally getting to see the special pair of wall sconces he made for us!  We cared about being as energy conserving as possible and Lawrence was really knowledgeable about all our bulb options.  Their showroom lets you try various shades over a variety of bulbs and you can really see the different light effects.  It feels really good to have put something into our home that not only makes us smile, but we know will stand the test of time.  If you want quality, supremely fine craftsmanship, great value, really knowledgeable staff and a fun experience purchasing lighting for your home or office, run to Metro Lighting!"
